Hero Amongst Hens...

Meet Prima - the anti-soporific, transgendered rooster who has been living at our house since Jess' eighth grade science project - though the chicks didn't come out pretty pastel colors as the experiment suggested they might, they were just too cute not to allow them to take up residence.

Protector of the five ladies (sometimes called Parmagiana, Marsala, Lemon-Pepper, Fried and Baked when I'm in the mood.)

Lover of rides in the car, on the tractor or anywhere in the arms of a friend.

Yesterday morning, the chicken coop had an open door and a pouf of feathers were piled near the Japanese maple - not good since we have some fox, some hawks and a 40lb terrier pup named Reeses new to the neighborhood. After a few porch calls and a stroll to the hen house, four chickens emerged, Prima and Lemon-Pepper not among them.

"You call Jess."
"No, you call Jess."
"Tell Rach, she'll call Jess."
